Walker Trust – Youth Award 2024

The Walker Trust Youth Performance Award will be held at the Wellington Folk Festival Labour Weekend 2024.

To be eligible for the award, entrants will be over 10 and under 26 years of age.

There will be two age groups:

  • Senior 17 – 25

The best performance will be awarded $500; 2nd prize $250

  • Junior 11 – 16

The best performance wins $200. The Junior performers will also be eligible for $50    encouragement awards.

Terms and conditions

  • The awards are for the best live performance of a traditional folk song or tune.
  • Entrants should briefly introduce their performance explaining the reason they chose this piece to perform, and its history.
  • To be considered for the award the performance must not exceed the time limit of 5 minutes.
  • Entrants may either be soloists or a group.
  • A group will be assessed on the same performance criteria as a solo performer.
  • A solo entrant may be accompanied by other musicians, (of any age) however, only the applicant on the entry form will be assessed.
  • Entrants may include a tune with a song as part of the song arrangement.
  • It is possible for tunes to be combined as a set.
  • The performance will be assessed on three broad criteria:  technical skills, musical skills and presentation skills

The Walker Traditional Folk Music Trust promotes songs and tunes, old and new, originating from the traditional folk music of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
