The Walker Trust Youth Performance Award will be held at the Wellington Folk Festival Labour Weekend 2025.
Entrants will perform at a concert in the Mairi Hall on Sunday 26th October 2025.
Songs and tunes, old and new, originating from the traditional folk music of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
YOUTH PERFORMANCE AWARDS
If you are over 10 and under 26 years of age, sing us a traditional folk song, or play us a traditional folk tune.
Age groups
- Senior 17 – 25 – The best performance will be awarded $500, and 2nd place $250
- Junior 11 – 16 – The best performance will be awarded $200
- All performers will also be eligible for $50 encouragement awards
Details
- Applicants must fill out an entry form to be considered for the award. (Email the entry form to the Walker Trust or fill one out at the Festival.)
- The performance must not exceed 5 minutes. This time does not include set up, but does include the introduction.
- Entrants should briefly introduce their performance, explaining the reason they chose this piece to perform, and its history.
- Entrants may either be soloists or a group.
- A group will be assessed by the same performance criteria as a solo performer.
- A solo entrant may be accompanied by other musicians (of any age), however, only the applicant on the entry form will be assessed.
- A performance may be any combination of tunes and/or songs, so long as they fit the musical criteria set out above.
The performance will be assessed on three broad criteria:
- Technical skills
- Musical skills
- Presentation skills
